In today's competitive marketplace the need to sell yourself effectively is increasingly important. Your CV is the first thing a potential employer judges you on. It is your own personal selling tool. Your CV gives about two minutes to create the right impression and if it is right you will gain an interview.
- Firstly you should always start with your name, date of birth, nationality, all contact details i.e. email, mobile, home numbers, e mail and of course your postal address. Make sure to check your mails regularly
- Consider a highlight section, Recruiters and hiring managers often take less than a minute to read a resume. To make your minute count, consider including a highlight section at the top of your resume, directly below your name, and, if you use one, your objective.
- Education comes next. This should include your secondary school and higher education ensuring that you include year of passing in reverse chronological order, the name of your institution/ University with grades and then any further courses that you might have done.
- Work History should be presented in reverse chronological order i.e. your most recent position listed first. Give details of the companies you have worked for with the titles of the positions you held. Specify period you were working for each company followed by duties should be listed in bullet points as this makes it easy reading.
- Highlight potentially relevant skills, abilities and attitudes that you have learnt or developed in previous jobs.
- Gaps on a CV only raise eyebrows! If you have taken a break put it down.
- Your CV must always be word-processed so that it looks far more professional and it should be no more than two or four at a push.
- Proofread Typos, misprints, and grammatical errors. A polished error free CV is the key to a successful job search.
- Before sending your CV to a potential employer make sure a friend or relative has read it for you. They will then be able to offer constructive advice if they feel the need to. Here are some top qualities that Employers seek
